Title: Online Visual Search 1

Requirements for participation:
Although we cannot verify it, please only participate in this study if you have normal or corrected-to-normal vision, especially no impairements in the ability to discriminate colors. You also must be at least 18 years of age (or the respective age of majority of your country, Wikipedia: Age of Majority).

Purpose of the Research Study:
The study is being conducted to gain more knowledge about the cognitive processes involved in visual attention.

Procedures:
The experiment will involve one session lasting approximately 10 minutes. The sesseion is divided into 8 blocks. After each block, you can make a short break. Please do not rearrange the window! Note that some keys might not work during the task.

Risks/Discomforts/Benefits:
There are no risks for participating in this study beyond those associated with normal computer use. Although it will not directly benefit you, this study will advance basic science on the cognitive processes involved in visual attention.

Voluntary participation:
Participation in this study is voluntary, and you can abort at any time without penalty. To abort the experiment, just close your browser window and no data will be transferred.

Confidentiality:
No personally identifying information will be asked and/or stored for this study. However, we will ask for general demographic information and your IP address will be saved (see Wikipedia: IP address).

Visual Search Task

Please read these instructions carefully and make sure you fully understand them before starting the experiment.


Time: The whole task takes about 10 minutes

Task: One after another, an image like the ones below will be presented on the screen for a very brief amount of time (<1 second). There are always eight objects arranged in a circle around a central fixation cross. One object will differ from all others in either COLOR (see right image for an example) or SHAPE (see left image for an example). You will not know in advance where the object is and whether it will differ in color or shape. Your task is to find this object and report the direction of the arrow inside of it.

If the arrow points to the left, please press the left arrow key on your keyboard with your left hand index finger. If the arrow points to the right, please press the right arrow key on your keyboard with your right hand index finger. If your answer is correct, the fixation cross will briefly turn green. If not, it will turn red. Between the images, please fixate your eyes on the cross.

Notes: Make your responses as QUICKLY and ACCURATELY as possible.
Do not listen to music, watch TV or do other distracting activities while the experiment is running.
Please do not rearrange the window.
After clicking Start, please immediately place your left hand index finger on the left arrow key and your right hand index finger on the right arrow key.
